Bell Looking At Fluvanna Rate Hikes

Delegate Rob Bell says he is hearing from a lot of Fluvanna County constituents who are worried about Aqua Virginia's proposed water and sewer rate hikes.

Bell recently wrote a letter to the State Corporation Commission (SCC) to make it aware of those concerns. Aqua Virginia is asking that rates be increased by 40 percent for water and 50 percent for sewer at Lake Monticello.

Right now, the SCC is reviewing the rate increases to determine whether or not they are appropriate.

"The increases have been so substantial," said 58th District Delegate Bell (R). "Obviously, these are hard economic times. You have people on fixed incomes. They're very worried about

Finding new uses for an old jail

PALMYRA—The padlock is straight out of Jack and the Beanstalk, while the door is huge, heavy and somewhat out of proportion to the rest of the building, which manages to be imposing and frightening despite being only two stories tall.

That’s the way it ought to be when you’re talking about a prison, and this summer you can go directly to jail, providing you’re just visiting.

The Old Stone Jail in Palmyra is no longer a correctional institution. Designed by Gen. John Hartwell Cocke and built by local contractor John G. Hughes back in the 1820s, the jail’s thick rock walls keep in the cool air and humidity and provide a museum milieu that’s totally post-Colonial penal, including the jail’s solitary confinement

Lake Directors Must be Leaders

Written by Jean J. Burns, Lake Monticello | 27 May 2010

There are no elected officials that impact Lake Monticello more than elected directors to the LMOA Board of Directors. Directors are the leaders and managers of this corporation and this community. Money is very important but even more important is the quality-of-management of that money and the overall management of the corporation and community in which we live.

I am convinced that Britt Johnson and Gary Dillon are the leaders we need on the LMOA Board of Directors. They will be informed directors

Fluvanna School Employees to take pay cut

The Fluvanna County School Board approved its $34 million budget Wednesday night. School employees are taking a pay cut to balance a thin budget.

Salary decreases range from 2 to 4.5 percent and are based on income, but Superintendent Tom Smith says no one will lose his or her job. The district does have 18 openings due to retirement or resignation and some of these positions could be filled.

The school is operating with $4.5 million less than last year.

Blue ridge Mountain Sports coming to Fluvanna!

From the Fluvanna Review:
Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, a high-end outfitter with seven stores in Virginia including Charlottesville, is moving its headquarters to Fluvanna County. The company will move next month into the building formerly occupied by the Conestoga Tile Company in the Starlite Industrial Park near Zions Crossroads. The building will also serve as a distribution point for some of its product. The move will bring about a half-dozen jobs to the county over the next several years.
